Over the years, I have struggled with anxiety and have seen a couple of different psychologists throughout different periods of my life.
At first, seeing a psychologist was a daunting experience as I didn’t really know what to expect. I envisioned sitting across from a person with a clip board, and they’re asking questions like “and how does that make you feel”. That perception soon changed when I realised how beneficial it was too open up to an unbiased, non-judgemental professional.
Finding the right psychologist was a little tricky to begin with, as the general referral process is through your GP. I didn’t have a regular GP who knew me well, so I was referred through their database of psychologists in my area, rather than selecting the best fit for me on a personal level. After a few ‘goes’, I eventually found an amazing psychologist who helped me navigate through a particular challenging period in my life.
Like any relationship, there is no ‘one-size fits all’. You want to be comfortable with the person you are opening up to, and feel that on some level they can resonate with you and understand your point of view.
Seeing a psychologist helped me gain an enormous amount of self-awareness. I have been able to apply this in many areas of my life, including at work, personal relationships, and most importantly the relationship with myself!
I believe every person would benefit in some way by seeing a psychologist. No one is perfect and at some stage throughout our lives, we all go through highs and lows. My experience seeing a psychologist has help guide me to develop invaluable tools to navigate my way through these ups & downs, and deal with stress/anxiety in a more healthy way.
